The Hannya mask with its horns is by far the best known of all Japanese Noh masks. The mask expresses the fury of a woman turned demon through jealousy and anger and who revenges by attacking.
The Hannya is considered as a Ghost Spirit (Onryo-kei) who represent the revengeful ghost as it appeared from Hell.
All revengeful ghost masks are revered with the spirit of God in accordance with the belief that when a person dies, the soul becomes God.
This Hannya mask is traditionally hand carved in hibiscus wood.
